Austrian Double in Parallel Slalom Berchtesgaden (GER)
The conditions have pretty much stayed the same as yesterday
when the Parallel Slalom was held today as the last competition
of the FIS Junior World Championships 2000 in Berchtesgaden,
Germany. Andreas Prommegger and Nina Schlegel made it an Austrian
double. Further to the forecast the weather was not expected
to be nice today but the organisers and participants of the
Junior Worlds alike were lucky today on the Götschen since
it only started to rain when the last Parallel Slalom duel
was finished. Andreas Prommegger from Salzburg who had already
claimed the title in the Parallel Giant Slalom the day before
yesterday added another gold to his collection. Facing the
Russian Dimitri Vaitkous in the final heat he got the first
run under his belt by only 10 hundreds of a second but also
triumphed in the second and won with a total of 65 hundreds
of a second. "It's unbelievable," the Austrian said, "I know
I am strong in slalom but it's just great that I could take
another one. It was very close with some riders at certain
times and I'm glad that I made it. The slope was fine, pretty
packed with just some soft snow on top so it was ok." Vaitkous
finished second and claimed the first-ever World Championship
medal for Russia. "This is the very best for us," the 18-year-old
from St. Petersburg said, overwhelmed, "I'm so happy that
I could do it. I had finished 15th only in the qualification
but I was hoping to end up among the top five or four. It's
just perfect that I made it to second." The two Germans Raphael
Geisreiter and Christian Ernthaler faced each other in the
duel for third place after having been beaten by Prommegger
and Vaitkous in the semi final. Geisreither easily won the
first run and could also beat his teammate in the second for
a total advantage of 63 hundreds of a second. "After I have
made it to the semi finals I really wanted to take the win,"
the 18-year-old from Traunstein said, "the bronze is fine
but I'm also a bit disappointed that I did not make it to
the final duel. In the semi final I won the first run against
Prommegger but then crashed in the second and he went on to
the fight for the gold, so it was my own fault. However, I'm
happy that I got a medal." With a win in the womens' race
Nina Schlegel completed the Austrian double. She met Emmanuelle
Duboc in the duel for gold and won both runs against the French.
After having won the bronze in the Parallel Giant Slalom two
days ago, she also took her second podium this weekend. "It
went so much better today," she said, "third in the PGS was
fine for me but a win really is something different. It's
just great, and with Andi also getting a victory again, there's
probably some party going on tonight..." Duboc took the silver
medal and was happy too: "This is super," the 19-year-old
from the Pyrenees, "I did not expect me to do that good at
all when I got here... The longer the race was on today, the
stronger I became. When I was third after the qualifications
I definitely wanted to make it a good one but I set new goals
from heat to heat. It was so good. Her teammate Julie Pomagalski,
PGS Junior World Champion, faced Czech rider Zuzana Vojtechova
in the duel for third place and won with a total of 10 hundreds
of a second. "I was so tired," the French said, "but the bronze
is fine for me and it's not too bad that I missed the finals
since it was another French who made it instead." The FIS
Snowboard Junior Worlds 2000 were concluded with the official
closing ceremony today at the Götschen. For further information:
